Name: Crispian Thurlborn
Location: Japan
Originally from England, I lived/worked in the Republic of Korea for close to twelve years before moving on to Japan. During that time (and before) I have been fortunate enough to travel to a number of other countries around the world. I should, perhaps, think of turning to travel writing rather than fantasy! I have written several short stories, but was caught up with my novel, “Throne of Ice”, for six of those twelve years in Korea. Work and everyday life within a foreign country limited the time I could spend on my passion and, therefore, much of my writing was done on the subway, in coffee shops, on buses, in stairwells, etc. On occasion it proved to be somewhat inspirational, however, I truly LOATHED it when people would try to read over my shoulder while I wrote! Actually, this still does bother me…
Coffee shops in South Korea are EXTREMELY noisy hives of activity. As anyone living there for even a short time could attest to, there really is no such thing as a quiet and contemplative place outside of a Buddhist temple! I have, therefore, developed an aptitude for ‘writing within the storm’. While I still cannot sit in a coffee shop and write amidst the tempest of noise that Korean people produce, I do find that I can listen to very loud music via my headphones so as to drown out the chatter! It is odd, perhaps, but it is quite relaxing… perhaps only because it seals me away from the world despite the chaos of it struggling to get in!
As I say, I now reside in Japan and all of that is in the past. I can, however, look back with a measure of fondness.
On September 22nd, 2007, I completed work upon the first book of my novel, “Throne of Ice“. To date it has been met with rejection after rejection.
As of October 2009, I have been considering an entire reworking of the manuscript in order to present the entirety of the story within a single volume. I continue along that lonely and well-trod path towards the realm of becoming a published author.
